Abstract

GONDIM, Ana Karen et al. Motivation of the parents for the practice of adoption. Bol. psicol [online]. 2008, vol.58, n.129, pp. 161-170. ISSN 0006-5943.

The contemporary society has extended gradually the debate regarding adoption. The present research aimed to identify the reasons that had led couples to decide for the adoption process. A structured interview composed of 10 open questions was conducted with 10 parents who had already adopted or were still waiting to adopt. The questions dealt with the following aspects: motivation to parenthood, expectations towards the selection process, identification of which member of the couple had the idea of adopting, preference for some type of child, fears related to adoption, conceptions concerning non legalized adoption, and search for psychological help during the process. The results demonstrated that the adoption process, although very desired by several couples, is still marked by difficulties, prejudice, lack of psychological assistance during the process and bureaucracy, which represent, most of the time, an obstacle as well as a discouraging factor.
