This article's aim is to survey instruments that have been used in the research of depression evaluation and also to analyze whether sex differences have been considered. A special focus was given to the issue of male depression evaluation. A number of 49 instruments were identified in the database. The following are the most frequent ones: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HRDS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Regarding specifically female depression, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is available. No instrument was identified to specifically assess male depression. Therefore it is concluded that little attention has been given to differences in symptoms of depression in males. Sample representativeness and the generality of results are questioned.
