CARLOTTO, Mary Sandra; CAMARA, Sheila Gonçalves; OTTO, Fernanda  y  KAUFFMANN, Priscila. Burnout Syndrome and coping in students of Psychology. Bol. psicol [online]. 2009, vol.59, n.131, pp. 167-178. ISSN 0006-5943.

The growing interest in the Burnout syndrome has caused an expansion of this field of study. Initial investigations, focusing on help professionals lead investigators to other professional fields and, more recently, studies have also investigated students. Burnout, in this population, consists of three dimensions: Emotional Exhaustion; Disbelieve, and Low Professional Effectiveness. The research aimed to identify the variables associated with the Burnout syndrome in a sample of 239 Psychology students of a private university. Instruments were used a questionnaire to identify demographic, academic and professional variables and the MBI-SS (Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey). Data was collected in classrooms previously drawn. Data analysis was conducted by the Pearson correlation. Results show that the coping strategies as active coping, planning, moderate coping and positive reinterpretation are negatively related to Burnout Syndrome and the strategies that focus on emotion, uncompromised behavior, denial, mental disengagement and use of substances showed positive association, in other words, raise the size of the syndrome. Interventions aimed at developing strategies that reduce burnout already in the training process are suggested.
