Abstract

CORONEL, Márcia Keller  and  WERLANG, Blanca Susana Guevara. Problem solving in homicides and suicide attempts. Bol. psicol [online]. 2011, vol.61, n.134, pp. 103-116. ISSN 0006-5943.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the flexibility to solve problems in subjects who have attempted suicide and others who had committed murder in order to verify differences when compared to the general population. Sample consisted of 32 subjects who had attempted suicide (G1), 30 murderers (G2) matched to 62 individuals from the general population (G3). Instruments used were the Stroop Color and Word Test, the subtests, Codes and Vocabulary WAIS-III and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. It was found that the G1 had lower scores compared to G2 and G3 (p <0.001). On the other hand, G2 showed lower scores than G3 (p< 0.001). It was concluded that G1 had less flexibility in solving problems than G2 and G3. Also, G2 showed greater rigidity in problem solving than G3.
