Abstract

NARDI, Suzana Catanio dos Santos  and  BENETTI, Silvia Pereira da Cruz. Marital violence: a study of characteristics of objectal relations in male offenders. Bol. psicol [online]. 2012, vol.62, n.136, pp. 53-66. ISSN 0006-5943.

This research was conducted on the mental processes of aggressive men, taking as reference psychoanalytic theory from an object relation perspective. Its objective was to identify characteristics of object relations in males involved in marital violence. Fifteen men who were being prosecuted due to violent assault against their partners participated in the study. Participants were recruited at the forum of a town situated in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. The instruments used were an interview, sociodemographic data sheet and the inventory BORRTI-O, used to assess the object relations, that is composed by five scales: pathological response, alienation, insecure relationship, egocentrism and social inability. The results indicated the presence of object relation deficits, especially in the egocentric scale. The prevalence of egocentric characteristics indicates serious difficulties in personal relationships.

Keywords : Object relations; partner violence; offending; psychoanalysis.
