In this essay, the author presents a historical-critical presentation of the constitution of the psychoanalytic method of Sigmund Freud. Originally written as an opening class of the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo, the author, inspired by an unexpected aphonia and a consequent identification with the limitations of the creator of psychoanalysis during his first moments of struggle against palate cancer, unveils three questions by which he tries to demonstrate the importance of words as a central device by the time of emergence of the psychoanalytic clinic: who speaks, what is spoken, and to whom is spoken in the psychoanalytic experience. Thus, it is possible to retrace the initial steps of the Freudian adventure and also the formulation of the first important psychoanalytic concepts: repression, trauma, sexuality and transference.
