Abstract

BENEVIDES-PEREIRA, Ana Maria Teresa. The burnout syndrome and its impact on teaching. Bol. psicol [online]. 2012, vol.62, n.137, pp. 155-168. ISSN 0006-5943.

Any work is of the utmost importance due to both its social repercussions as its personal connotations. However, concern for the educators' work is constantly decreasing together with their labor earnings, causing serious consequences to teachers and students. There are several factors that present occupational stress to teachers which may develop into the Burnout Syndrome. Teachers' burnout, characterized by an increase in emotional exhaustion and dehumanization, with the resulting reduction in personal accomplishment, causes disturbances, not only in the teacher, but in the school and in teaching as well. Educational problems in Brazil are ancient and chronic. The situation will hardly change without sufficient investments in fair wages to educators, adequate working conditions and recovery of their social status

Keywords : Burnout syndrome; teachers' performance; teaching; teacher-student relationship.
