Thirty articles resultant from the combination of the descriptors "creativity" and "gender" were analyzed. The research gender differences in individual and environmental dimensions that affect the creative process. A significant number of studies indicated no differences between males and females. However, a difference was observed when specific factors such as fluency, originality, verbal creativity and sensitivity were considered. The male performance exhibited a tendency to overcome the feminine in cognitive abilities, while the female means results were superior in non-cognitive factors. The impact of sociocultural factors was emphasized among other hypotheses to explain the observed differences. It is expected that this study contributes to the understanding of the role of gender in the development and expression of creativity and to call attention to the lack of research focusing on this variable in samples of individuals with highly creative productions in diverse fields
