Abstract

PAULA, Fraulein Vidigal de  and  LEME, Maria Isabel da Silva. Neologisms production for evaluation of morphological awareness in elementary scho-ol. Bol. psicol [online]. 2017, vol.67, n.146, pp. 51-66. ISSN 0006-5943.

This study examined the psychometric properties of an instrument aimed to assess morphological awareness through the production of new words (neologisms), using prefixes and suffixes. Participated 260 children, of the 2, 4, 6 and 8 years of an elementary private school, in the city of São Paulo. They performed individually the task of neologism production, phonological awareness and fluency in reading words; and collectively, the syntactic awareness tasks, inflectional and derivational morphological awareness, receptive vocabulary, sentence comprehension and writing under dictation. The neologism production showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha 0.95), discriminating the four school years. It also correlated positively with the four metalinguistic tasks besides vocabulary, sentence comprehension, fluency in reading and writing words. It was concluded that the instrument provided evidence of reliability and validity, being recommended to evaluate morphological awareness in elementary school
