RAMOS, Maria Beatriz Jacques. Psicanálise e literatura: Noite na Taverna. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2006, n.29, pp. 97-106. ISSN 0100-3437.

In this study the author describes adolescence as a necessary passage in life cycle characterized by losses of the child’s body and identity, supported in parental identification and deidealization. It’s the phase of the psychic development when all kinds of relationship resemble the deep and intense emotional aspect of the youngster. The adolescent experiences this separation from loving objects even though the Edipic feelings reinforce the desire for his or her parents. In the analyses of this unsolved conflict one can note marks on behavior, involvement with others and new learnings. The author cites the masterpiece “Noite na Taverna” by Álvares de Azevedo, published in 1878. A compilation of fantastic stories told by a group of friends sit around a table in a tavern. Romanic and satanic elements get together in a plot of violence, corruption, adultery, betrayal and death. Vengeance, tediousness, drinking, mourning and love are remarkable themes. The author focuses on a specific type of adolescent, the one who keeps on development failures, narcissic wounds, an the will of regression to phases when fantasy and omnipotence lead to an illusion of a magical control over the world and the others.
