Abstract

RIBEIRO, Maria Mazzarello Cotta. From tragedy to drama, survive through humour!. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2008, n.31, pp. 104-113. ISSN 0100-3437.

This text coments the three forms of comicity: wit, comedy and humour, showing that humour gets “something of greatness and elevation” that is missing in the other forms of getting pleasure from intellectual activity. The author discusses the implications of humour in the psychoanalytic clinic, focusing upon the characteristics of the patient’s superego, as well as, the invulnerability of the ego and the triumph of narcissism in dealing with the sufferings of life, and ways used by people to transform individual drama into simple existential tragedy.

Keywords : Humour; Wit; Comedy; Masochism; Narcissism; Death impulse; Invulnerability of the ego; Superego.
