Humor, considered by Freud as stubborn and rebellious as well as a precious and rare gift, differs from jokes and comedy, as can be seen in his theoretical study of 1905 “Jokes and their relationship with the Unconscious” and also in the1927 essay “Humor” presented by him in the X International Congress of Psychoanalysis. If the tragic approach -that inspired the psychoanalytical thought and its practice- has already been widely explored, humor, on the other hand, has been neglected by psychoanalytic followers. Winnicot and Ferenzi presented valuable contributions on humor and playing in clinical work. In 1957, Lacan revisits the topic in the Seminar “The shaping of the Unconscious”. Psychoanalysts have retaken humor, viewed as the other side of tragedy, verse and reverse, tragic and comic, a valuable tool to be used in the psychoanalytical clinic and in life itself. Jokes, humor and laughter can be considered effective ways of dealing with discomfort/uneasiness.
