Abstract

RAMOS, Maria Beatriz Jacques. Narcissism and depression: an essay on disillusion. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2010, n.34, pp. 71-78. ISSN 0100-3437.

This text considers the illusion and disillusion of unachievable desires, the feeling of how individuals would like to be and the distance between their aspirations and future goals. Self-love indicates how individuals maintain the ego ideal when interpreting facts of their life and their relationships, in a lower or higher degree, with others in terms of complementarity, since each person’s history corresponds to the other’s history. In other words, external world effects act on psychism, producing consequences on narcissism, such as separations, frustrations and losses, which might lead to depression. Drive vicissitude takes place in the encounter with the other. The more narcissistic a relationship is the higher the aggression; the higher the narcissistic commitment, the higher the individual’s envy in object relations. Based on such theoretical framework, the term disillusion is used as an expression of excess and pain for what has already passed.

Keywords : Narcissism; Depression; Disillusion.
