Psychoanalysis with children is often confronted with what is designated here as maternal madness, meaning a position of “object of the mother” which seems to limit in advance the horizon of analytical work. This situation frequently directs the analyst who receives the child towards a “separation”, a cutting of the “jouissance” link, which, for us, can be interpreted as a resistance to the mother’s transference, carried over by the child. In order to specify the coordinates of the analytical act in these cases, we have tried to show how failure of the pre-specular operation of maternal love leads to drive violence, which certain forms of maternal madness attempt to ward off.
