FREITAS, Fernanda Ribeiro de. Traumatic consequences of violence on children and adolescents in favelas of Rio de Janeiro: any difference from terrorist acts in other parts of the world?. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2016, n.45, pp. 55-63. ISSN 0100-3437.

Terrorist acts are political, ideological, ethnic or religious acts to express intense dissatisfaction by means of extreme violence. The methods used by favela’s drug lords are very similar to those of terrorists: torture, bombings, kidnappings, sexual violence and threats to general safety and security. Irrespective of reasons, their motivations are very similar in terms of pursue of power. Victims feel compelled to abide by dictatorial and violent rules. The banalization of violence and the frequency of such acts broadcast in the local news makes one wonder if the number of casualties in favelas is not similar - or either higher. The notion of trauma as conceived by Donald Winnicott relates trauma to environmental failures interrupting the continuation of being and breakage of trust in the environment. Expressed in different ways, one can discuss traumatic experiences in specific terms according to the process of each individual’s maturation. The study of traumatic consequences of terrorism caters for a much wider spectrum of cases, irrespective of motivations or its victims’ cultural background.
