Abstract

LIGEIRO, Vivian Martins  and  JORGE, Marco Antonio Coutinho. Psychoanalysis and art: the triumph of the real. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2018, n.49, pp. 15-29. ISSN 0100-3437.

Within the artistic field that is currently called contemporary art, some of the works that do not seem to appeal to beauty and good form have aroused our attention. On the contrary, often using repulsive materials and the artist’s own body, our gaze is drawn to the horror they arouse. From a bibliographical review of articles that deal with the relationship between contemporary art and psychoanalysis, we questioned whether it would be closer to the real, that is, if it would be at the limit of the representation. The present work has the objective to problematize the relationship between the Lacanian concept of real and art, or more precisely, to reflect on the place of the real in contemporary art, especially in performance. We will use the concepts of shattered body and Strange (Unheimlich), to better ground such reflection, as well as to use Orlan’s artistic production.

Keywords : Psychoanalysis; Contemporary art; Real.
