Abstract

DUQUE, Francisco de Assis. Psychoanalytic empathy: possibilities and difficulties. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2018, n.49, pp. 97-104. ISSN 0100-3437.

The aim of this study is to reflect upon the concept of empathy in the works of Freud and Ferenczi, and its connection with authors involved with this concept as of the 50's. It emphasizes the origin of the term, adoption of the empathic state by the analyst, and the care announced by Freud, as well as the way this concept was gradually introduced into clinical treatment. It deals with Ferenczi's contributions to the analyst's ability to use sensitivity and understanding in the patient's psychic conflicts. The text highlights the importance of psychoanalytic technique and the appropriate use of empathy as a particular quality of the analyst. The work points out aspects that differentiate empathy, identification, and countertransference in the daily life of the psychoanalytic clinical process.

Keywords : Freud; Ferenczi; Psychoanalytic empathy; Identification.
