The text proposes a reading of The Civilization and its Discontents, contextualizing it with the period of the First World War. Freud followed social movements as political and economic crises, the defeat of Germany, the great frustration of Adolf Hitler and his fellow ex-combatants, the founding of the Nazi party in 1923 and the rise of the III Reich. We have a strong impression that Freud wished to transmit something that he considered very important to the society of his time. All persons needed an understanding of self and other not only from an outside view, but mainly looking at themselves and others inside making aware what was unconscious. To realize, without escaping from one’s truth, how much one is similar to another. Freud seemed irritated by prejudices, with an illusion of absolute happiness and completeness, to convey between the lines his encounter with a lack-to-be. It draws attention to the reality of the death drive and the incompleteness of the human subject in his psychic structure
