The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the psychic suffering that emerges from the work in the contemporary psychoanalytic clinic and its unfolding through the symptoms, in which the symbolic is captured by existential emptiness. The presentation includes considerations on human frailty to tolerate truths about oneself, to deal with the unbearable, to face unbearable yet recognizable pain and the pursuit for the unconscious of avoidant actions. The theoretical framework of Freud, Bion and Winnicott give support to the proposed reflections and conceptual support to understand the implications of the place of the symptom in impeding the formation of links that permeate the psychoanalytic work.
