Abstract

This article discusses about the subject of Melancholy, in the light of the teachings of Freud and Lacan, mainly, having as a backdrop the film of the same title (Melancholia), by Lars Von Trier, released in 2011, making considerations about the differences between depression, more accentuated form of melancholy, positioned in the field of neurosis; grief, slow, painful and gradual process, with feelings of deep sadness and withdrawal from normal activities, which are not related to a lost object, generating inability to replace with a new object, for a certain time; and melancholy, causeless sadness, which resides in the permanent impossibility of mourning the lost object being reported by many as an expression of psychotic or borderline structure - of the border between neurosis and psychosis.
