Abstract

MIGLIAVACCA, Eva Maria. The naked soul: Lucian - and Sigmund - Freud. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.31, n.46, pp. 56-61. ISSN 0101-3106.

The family relationship of Sigmund Freud, the founder of Psychoanalysis, to his nephew Lucian Freud, one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, prompts reflection on similarities and contrasts between their understandings of the human soul; Sigmund by means of the word, whereas Lucian by one of the most ancient art forms, the painting. In this text I draw parallels, observing common aspects between Lucian and Sigmund. Painting and psychoanalysis are intertwined, but the uniqueness of both the psychoanalyst and the painter is preserved. The basis for my thoughts arises from analytical experience and contact with psychoanalysis. The use of the artist’s works constitutes a special and inspiring excuse to reflect on the work of the analyst and the psychological conditions accompanying the creative process.

Keywords : Creativity; Lucian Freud; Painting; Psychoanalysis; Sigmund Freud.
