JUNQUEIRA FILHO, Luiz Carlos Uchôa. Cultural roots of freudian metapsychology. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.31, n.47, pp. 30-36. ISSN 0101-3106.

This article intends to set some essential roots to outline metapsychology as an economic psychical resource involved in the representation of emotional experiences through “aesthetic tricks”. The first influence introduced is the state of mind of “uncanniness” described in Freud’s paper Das unheimliche, the pair of adjectives heimliche/unheimliche being considered the metapsychological word in its very best. The second influence is the contribution of the so called “British School of Psychoanalytical Aesthetics”, stressing the concepts of “aesthetical conflict” and “aesthetical reciprocity” of Meltzer and Meg H. Williams, illustrated by a critical analysis of W. Blake’s poem The tiger; the making of ideograms, as proposed by Bion, is exemplified clinically to enhance its economical and aesthetics implications. Finally, an example of “cultural unheimliche” is presented, an imaginary squabble between a medieval knight, Sir Lancelot, and Lampião, a popular Brazilian bandoleer.

Palavras-chave : Aesthetic conflict; Ideogramaticization; Metapsychology; Aesthetic reciprocity.
