Abstract

This paper discusses the myth of the tower of babel as it appears in the works of Michael Oakeshott, an English contemporary philosopher. A myth describes an ancestral structure of human mind, in its social and psychological aspects. Oakeshott works the tower of babel in a double approach: first, through moral philosophy, criticizing the excess of rationalism in modern moral life and enlightening the importance of habit and affetion in moral life, which has been heavily desqualified by the ‘social moral paradise’ project; the second approach is a litterary e say where he returns to the myth of babel to show the psycho-social simptons of a society that is maniac for the construction of a social paradise.
