Abstract

This essay propose, with Freud, that cruelty is fundamental in the relationship with the other, and therefore violence is inherent to culture. Psychoanalysis is, in the culture, the field that deals with this violence’s incidence, it, means, with trauma. Contemporary art, however, can also incite trauma’s force, the power of cruelty that constitute ourselves, thanks to the presentation of object as a fallen (and abject) object. In this context, works of luso-brasilian contemporary artist Artur Barrio are intertwined with Lacan’s ideas about object a.
