ALMEIDA, Mariângela Mendes de. From the word of the body to the body of the word: the imprisioned letter. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2009, vol.32, n.48, pp. 82-88. ISSN 0101-3106.

Considering the work with two patients in different levels of mental functioning, the author describes a situation in which “writing” happens as “an extension of the body”, and another in which there is a concrete “inscription of letters on the body”, in a context of difficulty in experiencing psychic pain. The attention and containment regarding not only “mentalized” but also primitive aspects, still expressed in a sensorial level, are emphasized, so that psychic experience including its varied manifestations, can be enlarged and processed within the analyst and patient relationship.

Palavras-chave : Primitive states of mind; Difficulty in experiencing psychic pain; Analyst and patient relationship.
