The manumission registries for the city of São Paulo are at the Arquivo Público do Estado, Segundo Cartório de Notas da Capital, Escrituras, Livros de Notas (1742-1804). These documents provide significant information on the forms of manumission in that period, revealing that liberty was not easily given and many masters continued to have their former slaves under control.
