This article examines the concept of “displacement”, explained by Fernando Pessoa in a letter to João Gaspar Simões, and the “methods” exposed by his half-heteronym Bernardo Soares in the Book of Disquiet, in comparison with the mechanisms of substitution and repression detected by Freud in dreams, day-dreams and memories. It aims at showing similarities and differences regarding the part of unconscious and consciousness in poetic invention and in the process of sublimation as it occurs in Pessoa’s work.
