Abstract

BILENKY, Marina K.. Shame: suffering and dignity. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2014, vol.37, n.58, pp. 133-145. ISSN 0101-3106.

The sentiment of shame has gradually been more and more studied in the psychoanalytical field. From its narcissistic origin, it is constitutive of the human being. It is in the center of the process of subjectivity construction and fundamental as social ties regulator. But, due to its traumatic characteristic, shame causes strong defenses that lead to concealment. A more acute listening of this sentiment points to narcissistic issues, enlightning aspects of the patient's psychological functioning that otherwise would remain hidden and inaccessible to thinking and working through.

Keywords : Shame; Subjectivity; Ego ideal; Guilt; Concealment.
