Abstract

LOBO, Reinaldo. What is your sex?. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.63, pp. 125-134. ISSN 0101-3106.

The article starts with the current discussion in society about what determinates the sexual gender in humans. The main current theories propose two excluding hypotheses: the determination by the culture or by the biology. The author proposes the reflection about an alternative route of explanation, suggesting that we consider the question in a more complex way, from a psychoanalytic point of view. Besides the undeniable interaction between the cultural and the biological, it considers the nexus offered by the unconscious fantasies and the creative imagination. Using concepts by D.W. Winnicott and C. Castoriadis on the imaginative elaboration of the body and the primary imagination in the determination- indetermination of what is constituted and contingent in sex, it present a brief clinical vignette illustrating an unconscious process of the invention of sexuality.

Keywords : Identity; Culture; Nature; Unconscious fantasies; Creation.
