Resumen

MIGLIAVACCA, Eva Maria. Envy, in peace and war. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.65, pp. 65-74. ISSN 0101-3106.

In this article I reflect on the sentiment of envy in times of both peace and war. To do so, I take elements from fiction and from reality. I refer to a short story by Machado de Assis and biographical details of Alexander Yersin, one of the discoverers of the bubonic plague bacillus. Added to these, I refer to the looting of art works by the Nazis during World War II. Different aspects of the dynamics of envy, especially as defined by Melanie Klein, intertwine in these three sources. The story of Yersin and the the way the Monuments Men confronted the Nazis inspire us to think of an antidote and counterpoint to the virulence of envy.

Palabras clave : Envy; Machado de Assis; Alexander Yersin; Nazism; Monuments Men.
