Abstract

SANTOS, Janderson Farias Silvestre dos; RIBEIRO, Marina Ferreira da Rosa  and  SANTOS, Igor Marques dos. Envy: the contemporary aesthetics of violence. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.65, pp. 75-89. ISSN 0101-3106.

This article aims to conceptually reflect upon the issue of envy. Based on Melanie Klein's concept of primary envy, this article proposes a brief dialogue with texts belonging to the Judeo-Christian tradition, dealing with that matter. In order to show the strength of the concept today some remarks are made about contemporary issues related to acts of violence showing their close relationship with envy. Afterwards, an analysis of a contemporary film production is made - entitled The Neon Demon, by director Nicolas Winding Refn, released in 2016. That production was rich in metaphors which help us think about the unfolding of the envious process.

Keywords : Envy; Contemporary; Melanie Klein; The Neon Demon.
