This article discusses the identification with the aggressor, as one of the consequences of early abuse in Ferenczi's theory of trauma. The Ferenczian notion of introjection - a libidinal process resulting from mourning - is compared to the idea of incorporation- an anti-libidinal process which, as described by Abraham & Torok, is responsible for maintaining the trauma outside thinking, in a crypt, passing it on to future generations in a form that is cannot be the object of workingthrough. The identification with the aggressor is compared to the narcissistic melancholic identification in Freud's Mourning and melancholia. The differences between identifications at the origin of ego, archaic superego, and the post-oedipal superego are studied from the view point of the oscillation between the schizoid-paranoid and the depressive positions, as described by Klein and Bion.
