Abstract

GOLDENSTEIN, Eduardo. The comprehensive meaning of the word freedom. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2019, vol.41, n.67-68, pp.45-53. ISSN 0101-3106.

How to think about freedom? How to define freedom? These are the issues raised in this article. Freedom has been an ancient concern of human beings so much that Rollo May (1987) consider that the first man's act of freedom occurred when he who lives in the Garden of Eden harmoniously with Nature but without self-consciousness, acquires consciousness and is banished from Paradise to never come back. Considering that throughout human history hundreds of thousands of people died willingly and in an act of love for what they considered a precious freedom, we can thus understand the importance of this subject. The theoretical references of this article are Erich Fromm and Rollo May.

Keywords : Freedom; Concept; Diversity; Meaning.
