Abstract

GHIRARDI, José Garcez. The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: notes on literary sources in Bion's autobiography. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2021, vol.43, n.72, pp. 39-48. ISSN 0101-3106.

ABSTRACT This paper adopts the standpoint of literary studies to examine some of the literary sources referred to by Wilfred Bion in his autobiography. It is argued that Bion's selection of authors points to a specific reading of the English literary tradition which puts center-stage the romantic poets and its critic of the enlightenment version of modernity. It is suggested that Bion's choices spring from his interest in the metaphorical and allegorical language characteristic of poetic diction, in general, and of romantic poets, in particular.

Keywords : Bion; romantic poetry; allegorical language; modernity.
