Abstract

FUKS, Betty Bernardo  and  CAMPOS, Tatiana Silvera Porto. Anorexia: the urgency of a new clinical practice. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2010, vol.42, n.1, pp. 39-62. ISSN 0101-4838.

This article presents a clinical/theoretical reflection about the pathos of anorexia. For this purpose, several contributions of historical relevance were selected as references: the theories proposed by Freud and Lacan, more recent contributions by contemporary psychoanalysts, and experiences originated in the clinical practice with patients. The contemporary appearance of anorexia and bulimia has led some to consider them as new diseases, caused mainly by contemporary culture. According to psychoanalysis, the veracity of such conclusions should be questioned. Although the role played by contemporary culture on the incidence of anorexia may be considered, this is not a new phenomenon, since the first records of the disease date from the 17th century. However, the severity of this condition and the way some patients present themselves today urgently demand that some aspects of the psychoanalytic practice be reconsidered.

Keywords : anorexia; bulimia; psychoanalytic clinic; contemporariness.
