Abstract

MARTINS, Francisco Moacir de Melo Catunda. Between melancholy and depression's abysms: the decayed Ego and the mood disturbances field. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2010, vol.42, n.1, pp. 171-181. ISSN 0101-4838.

We propose that a fourth structural field concerning psychoneurosis is to be added to those of neurosis, perversions and psychosis. Melancholia is distinguished from depression from a psychoanalytic point of view, in the specificity of the timopathic field. This distinction between their unconscious dynamics is carried out using Freud's and Lacan's works. Melancholia is linked to the movement of the drive dimension, while depression is linked to psychic conflict. In both, the Ego is involved. In melancholia the subject has fallen in an abyss without bottom and in depression the subject, as a zombie, is always walking at the board of precipices.

Keywords : melancholia; depression; psychopathology; psychoanalysis.
