The main objective of this paper is to analyze the main concepts in the construction of parenthood, based on the psychoanalytic notion that the process of becoming a parent begins long before the birth of the child. Nevertheless, the article intends to stress the fact that if the transition to parenthood is a process initiated during the parents childhood, the birth of an infant can produce an irreversible change in the parental psychic, helping them to reevaluate their own infantile history.
