Abstract

CANAVEZ, Fernanda  and  HERZOG, Regina. Between psychoanalysis and psychiatry: the medicalization of trauma in contemporaneity. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2011, vol.43, n.1, pp. 111-129. ISSN 0101-4838.

Symptoms that occur due to traumatic experiences are a challenge for clinical therapists, regardless of their clinical-theoretical standards. This article aims to discuss the traumatic clinical disorders, as referred to in psychoanalysis as well as in the psychiatric field. It is intended to appraise diagnostic categories which psychiatry uses in order to understand trauma, as well as the clinical proposal for its treatment. Its goal isn't to present the psychiatric discourse as a counterpoint to psychoanalysis, but to identify possible continuities and discontinuities of that discourse with the psychoanalytical clinic. At last, it shall draft contributions from the psychoanalytical field to the discussion of trauma and its destinations in contemporariness.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; psychiatry; trauma; clinic; posttraumatic stress disorder.
