Abstract

MARCOS, Cristina. Mother and daughter: devastation and love. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2011, vol.43, n.2, pp. 269-284. ISSN 0101-4838.

This paper takes as its starting point Lacan's statement that a mother may be a devastation to her daughter. Devastation is articulated to love and its impossibility. We know that Lacan's approach to the feminine is based on the categories of the real and the symbolic. Not-all submitted to castration and to the symbolic, woman has a privileged relation to the real, a relation that is contingent and sporadic. The devastation that a mother may be to her daughter is a manifestation of this relationship to the real. Bergman's Autumn Sonata shows a troubled relationship between a mother and her daughter, marked by the impossibility of love. We see in this movie the failure of the appearance (semblant) - and when it fails, devastation appears.

Keywords : mother; daughter; devastation; love.
