Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the multiple and contradictory meanings of the human body. First, the polysemy of the body is presented through its manifestation in several fields of knowledge and / or cultural means. Then, some clinical situations are analyzed from a psychosomatic psychoanalytically-oriented perspective. The living body provides the biographical meaning which is necessary to better understand diseases as personal experiences, able to be submitted to psychotherapeutic interventions. Finally, the complexity of the relationship between body and subjectivity is acknowledged.
