Abstract

LEITE, Sonia. Conversion hysteria: some questions about the body in psycho-analysis. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2012, vol.44, n.1, pp. 83-102. ISSN 0101-4838.

This paper recovers the historical significance of the conversion hysteria notion, indicating its present day usefulness in psychoanalytical practice. By using Freudian writings as reference it highlights the notion of somatic compliance as being fundamental in the comprehension of the mechanism of conversion of psychic pain into physical pain. Moreover, it also shows that such notion anticipates the Freudian concept of death instinct.

Keywords : neurosis; hysteria; conversion; somatic; psychic.
