Abstract

FLORSHEIM, David Borges  and  BERLINCK, Manoel Tosta. Freud explains this?: Psychoanalysis between common sense, ideology and science. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2015, vol.47, n.2, pp. 115-126. ISSN 0101-4838.

Almost every psychoanalyst has heard the statement "Freud explains this", even from laypeople. We tried to evaluate this statement using the conceptions of Clifford Geertz, founder of hermeneutic anthropology, and taking into consideration the application of his conceptions both as common sense and ideology. We also tried to evaluate the epistemological status of psychoanalysis, considering also some differences between the human and the natural sciences - mainly concerning the concepts of understanding and explanation. Our conclusion refers to the valorization of a constant relativization and criticism of knowledge that seems either given or obvious.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; common sense; ideology; science.
