Even though it is not strictly speaking philosophy of science, Lacan's work contains many reflections that are typical of this branch of philosophy. However, the relation between his thought and the philosophy of science contemporary to his early work - France in the first half of the twentieth century - is often disregarded or only incompletely accounted for in Lacanian scholarship. French philosopher of science Émile Meyerson was often implicitly or explicitly referred to in Lacan's works, yet few publications can be found on this relationship between Meyerson and Lacan. The objective of this article is to contribute to the analysis of this relationship, pointing out its possible implications. For this, it discusses the convergence between Meyerson's doctrine, such as exposed in his book Identity and reality, and Lacan's works between 1936 and 1953, as well as the conditions for Lacan's reception of this doctrine. In conclusion, it is argued that this convergence allows the clarification of important issues in Lacan's early work, such as the concept of imago, his views on truth, and his thesis of the anthropomorphism of natural sciences.
