Abstract

CARVALHO, Jéssica Baêta de Azevêdo  and  GEWEHR, Rodrigo Barros. Between organic insufficiency and helplessness: a reading of the "Project of a psychology" (1895). Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2019, vol.51, n.2, pp. 53-83. ISSN 0101-4838.

This work proposes an analysis of the theoretical presupposes developed by Freud, in his 1895 Project of a Psychology, so as to describe and ground his hypothesis of a neuronal apparatus. His main argument affirms that the organic insufficiency, and moreover their repetitions, is decisive to the structure and functioning of psychic processes. Henceforth, the psychic apparatus is moulded through its own insufficiency, expressed in the absence of an a priori object of satisfaction. This condition will be subsequently developed through the notion of helplessness. However, there are disagreements and a possible debate about the role played by the "Ego" in the process. The way one approaches these notions of organic insufficiency and helplessness, as well as their possible distinctions and relations, will be crucial to this debate.

Keywords : organic insufficiency; helplessness; Constitution of the Ego; Project of a Psychology.
