Abstract

This article intends to discuss, considering the new family configurations, the articulation between the lacanian concepts of Maternal Function (as structural position in the subject's constitution) and the woman position (defined in the table of sexuation) in relation to the matter of maternity today. The lacanian theory has conceptual articulations which help comprehend the position of the woman in exercising the Maternal Function and the desire for the child. It remains, however, as a problem, in function of the question of maternal whim cited by Lacan, if it is necessary or contingent that a woman exerts the Maternal Function referenced to the primordial Other.
