It is relevant to remember that psychosomatic is bigger and nobler than the simple denotation of psychological conflicts harming the body. Psychosomatic is, above all, health, growth, maturing, that is, is the complete individual. Objective: To present Donald Woods Winnicott's main contributions to the psychosomatic study. Method: This is a qualitative study of a narrative review of the literature. Books by Donald Woods Winnicott as well as other authors of psychoanalysis and articles on Winnicottian theory were used. As descriptors, Winnicott, psychosomatics, hold, sufficiently good motherhood, psychosoma and maturation process were used in the Scielo and Medline databases. Inclusion criteria: articles dealing with the factors of psychosomatic integration and non-psychosomatic integration were addressed. Exclusion criteria: dissertations and theses were excluded. The titles and abstracts were initially read. Subsequently, the texts were read in full. From then on, the analysis of the theoretical basis of the studies was continued. The data were systematized into six categories: The foundation of psychosomatic integration: Soma, psyche and mind, The tendency to integration and the exercise of good enough motherhood, The effect of the first feeding for the psychic elaboration of the psychosomatic function, The steps towards independence and the conquest of the I-am, The result of the permanence of non-integration between psyche and soma: The consequence of the absence of the holding and the facilitating environment for the process of maturation and The meaning of somatizing and of "psychizing" as a message of unity between psyche and soma. Results and discussion: Winnicott describes personalization as the achievement of an intimate relationship between psyche and soma. Conclusion: Donald Woods Winnicott's main contributions to the psychosomatics are grounded in the heart of the words empathy and trust.
