Abstract

SANTOS, Tania Coelho dos  and  OLIVEIRA, Flavia Lana Garcia de. Narcissistic pathologies and depressive states in post-modernity. Tempo psicanal. [online]. 2022, vol.54, n.1, pp.6-30. ISSN 0101-4838.

Melancholiform states in different clinical configurations challenge us to investigate their relationship with narcissistic pathologies in postmodernity. We present a study based on freudian propositions in an attempt to update them in the clinical context of current civilization. Without the belief in an Other capable of transmitting the operation of castration to negate the instinctual orality regime and metaphorize it through the sexual sense, a massively masochistic position emerges that enjoys with the experience of feeling excluded and discredited. Considering the consumer practices that are widespread in contemporary democracies, the article circumscribes that the disappointment with the universal Other that does not exist can trigger imaginary phenomena in subjects who break with the symbolic order at the cost of self-destruction.

Keywords : Depression; melancholy; psychoanalysis; contemporaneity.
