Based on the studies of Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, who emphasized that the pervert's compulsion for aesthetics was even stronger than the sexual compulsion, the author herein discusses Machado de Assis's short story "The Secret Cause" and proposes the possibility of reading the works of this Fluminense author from the view point of perverse traits in relation to science and behavior in the XIX Century.
