Abstract

Although Freud, in “Interpretation of dreams”, inicially realized that anguished dreams opposed his central proposition that dreams were the fulfillments of unconscious desires, he tried hard to fit them into his formula, however, he could not become satisfied with his own explanations. He finally defined them as failures in oniric production and as “a problem concerning anguish and not concerning dreams”. Since then, the enigmatic character of anguished dreams has challenged Psychoanalysis to give them a direction of interpretation that contemplates both the dream theory and the concept of anguish. Stemming from the operations of alienation and separation that sustain ego construction, according to Lacan’s proposition, our thesis herein presented is that anguished dreams are, during sleep, the clinical equivalent to the experiences of unrealization that occur while being awake.
