Abstract

PAMPLONA, Cassandra; DIAS, Helena Melo  and  MOREIRA, Ana Cleide Guedes. Helplessness and masochism in the clinic with women. Reverso [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.64, pp. 37-41. ISSN 0102-7395.

Our clinical work on psychopathologic masochist led us to the concept of helplessness such as developed by Freud. In clinical work with women who have experienced in childhood cruelties and punishments inflicted by the mother figure, we observed a intense mental suffering that relates to the feeling of helplessness due to the possibility of being abandoned by the love object. In such cases, masochism associated to helplessness shows peculiarities that affect the difficult passage through castration and hence to the condition of becoming a woman.

Keywords : Psychoanalysis; Fundamental psychopathology; Masochism; Helplessness.
